City of Gainesville Pop Warner Cheerleaders Take First Place at National Championships!

On Dec. 12, the City of Gainesville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department’s (PRCA) Pop Warner Cheerleading squad, the Gator Midgets placed first in their division at the National Cheer and Dance Championships at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex™ in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. Not only did the squad win the title, they received the Spirit of Sportsmanship Award.

The Gator Midgets competed with six other teams in their division, Pop Warner Level I. The routine was two minutes and ten seconds in length, and featured music from artists such as Fifth Harmony, Michael Jackson, and No Doubt. Judges noted that the routine’s combination of stunts, signs, pyramids, jumps, motions and dance were not only technically strong, but fun to watch as well.

The squad was also awarded the Spirit of Sportsmanship Award. This award is presented to the squad that demonstrates and promotes sportsmanship through ethical behavior, respect toward others, responsibility and good character.

“Wow! What a year it has been for the Gators Midgets! They brought their A-game to our League, Region and now the National cheer competition. They were outstanding! In addition to doing a great job with their competition routine, they represented the City of Gainesville, the Putnam Athletic League and the Southeast Region well,” said head coach Beverly Perry. “The coaching staff is very proud of them as well as their parents, the City of Gainesville, Putnam and the Southeast Region. Go – Gators!”
