Summer Heatwave is Here with Free, Cool Teen Programs

With the summer heating up, the City of Gainesville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department (PRCA) has free, cool teen programs to keep the fun going all season long! Summer Heatwave is back with coed basketball, a teen lounge and pool parties that will bring out the best in youth athletics, activities and involvement. Basketball and teen lounges start Monday, June 16, and are available for ages 13-18 (18 if still in school). Summer Heatwave is a partnership between PRCA and the Gainesville Police Department and is designed to encourage positive engagement for youths with their community and members of law enforcement, while having fun with friends.

Coed basketball is open to all players, regardless of skill. Kids will learn the values of respect and fairness through sportsmanship, and all basketball and teen lounge participants must attend life skills’ classes in order to play. Games and practices are at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Multipurpose Center, located at 1028 NE 14th St. Games for ages 13-15 are Tuesdays and Thursdays, and games for ages 16-18 are Monday and Wednesday - both run from 2 to 9 p.m., with the last game played at 8 p.m. Players can register online or in person at the center. The season ends Friday, Aug. 8 with a single elimination tournament.

Starting this year, the Martin Luther King Jr. Multipurpose Center will be open for a teen lounge with special activities like open gym, movie nights, free swimming and Xbox tournaments. The lounge is open Monday, June 16-Friday, Aug. 15 (Monday-Fridays, 6-9 p.m.). Participants will need a wristband to participate and can register at the center. Transportation from Porters, Eastside and Northside Villas Community Centers will be provided, please check the Teen Summer Programs page on our website.
