An amazing event is about to happen! The Gainesville Arts and Parks Foundation, Inc. (GAP Foundation) is participating in The Amazing Give for the first time this year. The Amazing Give, sponsored by the Community Foundation of North Central Florida, is a 24-hour online fundraising event for local nonprofits that begins at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 21 and continues through 6 p.m. Thursday, March 22.
Funds raised by the Gainesville Arts and Parks (GAP) Foundation, Inc. during The Amazing Give will be designated for the Happy Camper summer camp session scholarship program. This program provides needs-based scholarships for elementary-aged children so they may attend the Happy Campers Summer Camp, based at these four city recreation centers: Albert R. Massey (Westside), Clarence R. Kelly, Eastside and Porters. Since 2016, the Gainesville Arts and Parks Foundation has provided more than 350 summer camp scholarships for local children with financial need.
“We are very pleased with the Happy Camper summer program,” says Steve Phillips, director of parks, recreation and cultural affairs. “Camp activities provide healthy and exciting recreational, educational and cultural opportunities that are founded on the Six Pillars of the Character Counts curriculum. These pillars are trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.”
The GAP Foundation Board President Augi Lye says, “This is a win-win partnership between the city and the foundation, being that only 501(c)(3) organizations can participate in The Amazing Give. We are proud to be supporting our Gainesville youth by giving them free opportunities to grow, learn and be healthy and safe this summer.”
The Amazing Give is part of a national day of giving known as Give Local America, an event that helps hundreds of communities come together to promote and sustain philanthropy through collective impact and to bolster community giving with prize and matching funds incentives. In north central Florida, The Amazing Give began in 2015 and, in 2017, raised more than $850,000 for 75 organizations with the generosity of more than 3,500 donors.
