OEO Releases FY 15-16 Annual Report


Today, Equal Opportunity Director Torey Alston released the OEO FY 15-16 annual report highlighting the achievements of the office and providing recommendations for the future. 


Here are a few highlights from FY 2015-2016:

  • Diversity in Contracting – General Government spent $3,525,614 with small, women, veteran and minority-owned firms in FY 2015-2016. Gainesville Regional Utilities spent $15,348,175 with small, women and minority businesses during the same period. In total, the City of Gainesville including Gainesville Regional Utilities spent nearly $19 million with local small, minority, women and service-disabled veteran businesses!
  • Investigations – The City had a total of 25 cases, down from 33 cases in the previous year and coordinated 9 successful mediations resulting in more than $23,000 going to local complainants, including the highest single amount awarded of $13,250! The 9 successful mediations are the most held by the office and highest amounts agreed upon since reporting began in 2004.
  • Diversity & Inclusion – Upon my recommendation to you in January, the city commission approved creation of a service-disabled veteran business program and approved changes to city policy mandating three written quotes for all purchases between $2,000 and $50,000, with one from a local small or service-disabled veteran business, if they exist. In July, we kicked off an internal American for Disabilities Act self-evaluation of all city programs, services and activities along with identifying ADA contacts across the organization in both General Government and Gainesville Regional Utilities.
  • Diversity in the Workforce – In May, the City Commission unanimously approved a voluntary affirmative action plan that shows 28% of the city’s employees are minorities and 30% are women. Approval and support of the voluntary affirmative action plan shows the city’s good faith efforts to increase underrepresentation in the work force.
  • Diversity Training – Nearly 2,200 employees completed the mandatory online diversity training module. The training content included topics of diversity, cultural competence, harassment and discrimination along with covering all equal opportunity policies of the city. We also conducted targeted training touching 50 employees via interactive sessions and touched another 250 employees during New Employee Orientation.
  • Diversity in the Community – Our office supports and collaborates with various organizations in the community including the Alachua County Council of the Blind, American Cancer Society, NAACP Alachua County Branch, Pride Community Center of North Central Florida, and the Junior League of Gainesville, to name just a few.
