Public invited to create, submit maps at interactive redistricting workshop

The City of Gainesville and the University of Florida’s Bob Graham Center for Public Service invite neighbors to actively participate in the redistricting process at the upcoming interactive workshop, “Drawing Democracy with Transparency.”

When: Tuesday, Dec. 7, 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Where: Pugh Hall Ocora, 296 Buckman Dr.

UF professors Michael McDonald, Ph.D., creator of the DistrictBuilder mapping tool, and Dan Smith, Ph.D., will teach participants how to create district maps using the on-line mapping tool. Attendees are asked to bring their personal laptops to use at the workshop and to RSVP online.

The city’s charter requires adjustments to the boundary lines of Gainesville’s four districts within two years of the completion of a U.S. Census. The Gainesville City Commission is expected to review submitted maps and approve new district boundaries next May.

The event is free and open to the public. Event parking has been reserved in the Murphree Hall gated lot. For event details, call 352-846-1575.
