Groundbreaking Ceremony for Gainesville Fire Rescue’s Station 1

A groundbreaking ceremony for Gainesville Fire Rescue’s newest fire station, Station 1, will be held at 8 a.m. Monday, April 17 at 525 S. Main St. The new Fire Station 1 will be located a mere block away from the existing Station 1, and will continue to serve the downtown area and adjacent neighborhoods. The original Station 1 was built in 1962, but has outlived the building’s lifespan.

Building a new Station 1 will allow Gainesville Fire Rescue (GFR) to house newer equipment, and to expand their service capabilities in the future. It will also enhance GFR’s efficiency and effectiveness in providing the appropriate level of fire rescue and emergency medical services for our growing community.

Fire Station 1 serves as Gainesville’s main fire station, and is its largest, housing a tower, engine and squad companies, as well as a district chief. With the growth that is occurring near that area, Station 1 will serve as a gateway between downtown and the expanding Depot Park area.

Station 1 will be constructed to meet the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building rating system’s silver certification requirements.

Members of the news media are asked to display media credentials. The area will be open to media representatives for setup at 7:30 a.m. City staff will direct media representatives to setup locations. All media representatives are asked to complete setup of cameras and audio recorders no later than 7:45 a.m.
