Annual Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony at the Thomas Center for the Arts on December 6

On Saturday, December 6, the City of Gainesville Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs will host its annual Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony at the Thomas Center for the Arts. Revelers are asked to gather outside the Thomas Center at 7:30 p.m. where they will be treated to holiday caroling by the Singers of the Reformation and The Gainesville Harmony Show Chorus.

New Year’s Eve Celebration Returns to Gainesville’s Bo Diddley Community Plaza on December 31

The Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs will host Downtown Countdown, a New Year’s Eve celebration concert at the Bo Diddley Community Plaza. The concert will begin at 8 p.m. and run until 12:30 a.m.

Come be swept away by medieval magic. Volunteer opportunities are now available for the 23rd Annual Hoggetowne Medieval Faire on January 24-25 and January 30-February 1, 2009! Volunteers will receive a commemorative T-shirt and a guest pass for free admission to come back and enjoy the festivities another day.

23rd Annual Hoggetowne Medieval Faire School Day and Art & Essay Contest

Come be swept away with the medieval magic at the 23rd Annual Hoggetowne Medieval Faire, held January 24-25 and January 30-February 1, 2009 at the Alachua County Fairgrounds. The City of Gainesville Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs invites all schools and home school groups to take part in the excitement on School Day, held on Friday, January 30.

Smithsonian Traveling Photography Exhibit Depicts China in Transition

Separated from the West by thousands of miles and seemingly insurmountable cultural barriers, China has long been an unfamiliar, romanticized land—until recently. In the new exhibition “Documenting China: Contemporary Photography and Social Change,” the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) partners with Bates College Museum of Art in Lewiston, Maine to explore the social change in the most populous nation on Earth.
