Division of Cultural Affairs and Cox Media Produce Art Segment

The City of Gainesville is pleased to announce the production a seven minute art segment highlighting some of the Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs’ community-based cultural resources while exploring the visual environment, the importance of the arts and the historic Thomas Center for the Arts.

November 2009 Municipal Minutes

The November edition of the City Manager's electronic newsletter, Municipal Minutes, is now available. This monthly e-newsletter provides information about upcoming activities, projects and meetings in the City of Gainesville.

New curbside contract changes collection days, rates

Significant changes to the city's curbside collection program for solid waste, yard trash and recycling include: changes to some residents' collection day; the addition of pasteboard for recycling collection; bulk and yard trash changes; enhancement to customer service; and an additional holiday.

City Manager's Biweekly Report: Nov. 5-18, 2009

The "City Manager’s Biweekly Report to the City Commission" provides information about significant upcoming activities, projects and meetings in the City of Gainesville over the course of the next two to three weeks. In addition to brief descriptions on each of the upcoming activities, you can click on hyperlinks for more information regarding the presented topic.

City Offices Closed on Wednesday, Nov. 11

In observance of Veterans Day, city offices will be closed on Wednesday, Nov. 11. Additionally, all RTS offices will be closed and there will be no RTS bus service. ADA paratransit service will not be running on this date, including dialysis appointments. Regular bus service will resume on Thursday. Residential curbside collection of refuse will not be affected by this holiday.

St. Francis House and City of Gainesville Partner for Thanksgiving Day Meal

The City of Gainesville is pleased to announce that the St. Francis House has accepted the city’s offer to use the Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) Center, located at 1024 NE 14th St. in Gainesville as a supplementary site for providing voluntary meal service to the homeless and disadvantaged families during the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday, Nov. 26.

Pop Warner Cheerleaders Qualify for Southeast Region Cheer Competition

The Recreation Division is pleased to recognize the participants of the Pop Warner Cheerleading program. While participating in the Putnam Athletic League Cheer Competition on Saturday, Oct. 17, the “Baby Gators” were awarded first place in the Junior Pee-Wee, Pee Wee and Junior Midget divisions.

Now Accepting Registrations for Youth Basketball League

The Recreation Division is currently accepting registration for the youth recreational basketball league. Co-ed teams will be formed for children age five-15 and girl’s only teams will be formed for children age seven-14. The deadline to register for the program is Friday, Nov. 13.

A Journey through Eastern Civilizations and the Gainesville Handweavers Guild

The Thomas Center Galleries announce the opening of the "A Journey through Eastern Civilizations: From the Collection of William Earl Hutchinson’s Theatre of Memory" exhibition, which will run from Oct. 24, 2009 – Jan. 10, 2010 in the Main Gallery. This exhibition is a rich historical and esthetic journey through an eclectic collection of more than 100 rare Asian artifacts and documents loaned from the Theatre of Memory.

Cold Night Shelter Program Funding Cycle Application

In response to concerns about the number of unsheltered homeless persons living in the Gainesville area, the City of Gainesville (city) and Alachua County (county) are jointly sponsoring the Cold Night Shelter Program to provide funding to support additional shelter for homeless persons on a short-term basis with emphasis on immediate cold weather needs.

28th Annual Downtown Festival & Art Show Brings Out the Best in Gainesville

Celebrating its 28th anniversary in 2009, the Downtown Festival & Art Show is one of the nation’s premier outdoor fine arts festivals. The historic, tree-lined streets of downtown Gainesville, from City Hall to the Hippodrome State Theatre, will be transformed into a celebration of art and creativity on Saturday, Nov. 14 and Sunday, Nov. 15 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

RTS launches Google Transit online trip planner

Getting around Gainesville on public transit has become even easier! The City of Gainesville Regional Transit System (RTS) is proud to announce the launch of its first ever online trip planner, Google Transit.

Blues Concert Kicks Off Downtown Festival & Art Show

The Downtown Festival & Art Show will start rocking Friday, November 13 at 7 p.m. at the Bo Diddley Community Plaza with a Downtown Blues Concert presented by the North Central Florida Blues Society. Performances by the Florida Tazers, 6th Street Rhythm and Blues and Janiva Magness will provide an evening of music under the stars.

Free Wellness Screenings at Downtown Festival & Art Show

As Gainesville celebrates art and music during the Downtown Festival & Art Show, AARP and Walgreens will give visitors a chance to improve their health. This year, the AARP/Walgreens Wellness Tour has chosen the arts festival as one of the stops on its nationwide journey. Visitors will receive free screenings valued at more than $140 to determine cholesterol levels, blood pressure, blood glucose levels, body mass index, bone density and waist circumference. The tour’s customized bus will be located on East University Avenue throughout the festival weekend. The art festival will be held in historic downtown Gainesville on November 14 and 15 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
