Elected to the Gainesville City Commission for a three-year term May 2008, Commissioner Lauren Poe currently serves as Chair of the Commission's Regional Utilities Committee. Commissioner Poe is also a member of the Economic Development/University Community Committee, the Public Safety Committee, the Community Redevelopment Agency, North Central Florida Regional Planning Council, the Gainesville/Alachua County Metropolitan Transportation and Planning Organization, and the UF-Community Steering Committee on Responsible Alcohol Use.
Lauren was born in Minot, ND, but quickly relocated to Boulder, CO, where his brother Russell was born. Soon after, the Poe family moved to Oregon where Lauren spent his elementary years. Lauren moved to Gainesville in 1982 and attended Westwood Middle and Gainesville High School. He went on to earn a BA in History and M.Ed. in Secondary Education from the University of Florida. Lauren and Emily Monda Poe were married on July 3, 2009. Lauren’s parents Gerald and Cheryl are retired teachers and still live in the Gainesville area and Lauren’s brother Russell is a farmer in Moscow, ID.
Lauren has been a teacher in Alachua County for the past ten years. He is currently an Associate Professor of economics and government in the High School Dual Enrollment Program at Santa Fe College. Before that, Lauren taught American History at Fort Clarke Middle School. In his spare time, Lauren enjoys Gator athletics, cooking, traveling and golf.
