Public Works Department

The Public Works Department maintains the City's infrastructure, including streets, buildings, sidewalks, and stormwater systems, and traffic signs/signals with approximately 165 employees and an annual operating budget of $14.5 million. The department also oversees solid waste disposal, mosquito control, and public transportation services (RTS).

Mission Statement
Manage the city's transportation, stormwater, and solid waste systems to enhance the quality of life for the Gainesville Community.

Major Goals of the Department

  • Protect the City's investment in its roadway, drainage, bicycle and sidewalk facilities by the planning, implementation, and administration of maintenance, inspection and improvement programs.
  • Protect the city's natural resources in a manner compatible with policies, codes, and regulations.
  • Provide effective, efficient, safe and environmentally sensitive mosquito control services.
  • Provide quality solid waste management services to the community.

Administration
The department's administration provides oversight of all budgeting and personnel matters for the Public Works Department. Real Estate and Surveying services are provided for all of the General Government Departments. Additional services include departmental billing, solid waste collection, and surveying (real estate, surveying, GIS).
