Free Fridays Plaza Series Continues!
|
Cultural Affairs invites the public to join us for the Let’s Go Downtown Free Fridays Plaza Series, the annual series of family-friendly free concerts in the Downtown Community Plaza. Featuring some of the best local and regional musicians, this series runs through October and is highly anticipated by its many fans. City Commission Swearing In Ceremony
|
The City Commission Swearing In Ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, May 22 at 12 noon. This year's event will be held at the Thelma Boltin Center, located at 516 NE 2nd Avenue. The Oath of Office will be administered to Jack Donovan, District 3 Commissioner, Thomas Hawkins, Jr., At-Large Commissioner and Lauren Poe, District 2 Commissoner.
This event is open to the public. Guests are encouraged to park at the Kirby Smith Building located at 620 East University Avenue.

DEP Releases Orange Creek Basin Management Action Plan: Program Moves Forward
|
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) announced on May 14, 2008 the adoption of the Orange Creek Basin Management Action Plan (BMAP), a roadmap to restoring and protecting water quality in the Orange Creek Basin. The action plan was developed in partnership with the City of Gainesville, Marion and Alachua Counties, the St. Johns River Water Management District, Alachua County Health Department, University of Florida, Gainesville Regional Utilities, private silviculture interests and other local and state stakeholders. Memorial Day to be Observed on Monday, May 26
|
In observance of Memorial Day, City offices will be closed on Monday, May 26. Additionally, all RTS offices will be closed and there will be no RTS bus service. ADA paratransit service will not be running on this date, except for dialysis appointments. Due to the holiday, there will only be one regularly scheduled City Commission meeting in May. Gainesville’s curbside residential collection service for solid waste, recycling and yard trash will not be affected by the holiday.

Juror’s Choice: 2007 Regional Award Winners Exhibition at the Thomas Center Galleries

The Thomas Center Galleries are pleased to announce the opening of Juror’s Choice: 2007 Regional Award Winner art exhibition featuring the 2007 Regional Award Winners, which will run from May 17 - July 6, 2008 in the Main Gallery. A free public reception will be held Thursday, May 29, 2008 from 5 – 7 p.m. The exhibition features a variety of 2-D and 3-D work by four Florida award winners from the Thomas Center Galleries’ 2007 Regional Juried Exhibition. Public Works Traffic Management System Phase 1 Update
|
The Traffic Management System Manufacturer, Naztec, will begin installation of the controller and cabinets for Phase 1 of the Traffic Management System. The initial section of work began on Tuesday, May 13 along the Newberry Road corridor, west of NW 43rd Street and continues west to 122nd Street. This segment of work is being performed through Thursday, May 15, 2008 from 8:30 p.m. until 6:30 a.m. The work is being done at night to minimize traffic disruptions. Read more...

The string band Physical Medicine will perform at Gainesville’s Downtown Community Plaza on May 30 from 8 – 10 p.m. as part of the Downtown Plaza “Free Fridays.” Physical Medicine is an all-star band of the cream of Gainesville’s traditional acoustic music scene.
