City Administrative Offices Closed on Friday
A recent decision has been made to close city administrative offices tomorrow (Friday, August 23). 
Curbside collection delayed due to Tropical Storm Fay
Curbside collection of solid waste, recycling and yard trash will not occur on Friday, August 22. Collection will be delayed at least one day and will occur as soon thereafter as weather conditions permit. Residents are encouraged to remove carts, bins, yard trash from the curb on Friday. 
Early Voting Suspended

Tonight's City Commission Meeting
Tonight's City Commission meeting will reconvene at 6 p.m. Items 080155 (retiree health insurance and trust fund), 080227 (amending the Five Point special area plan), 070275 (alternate sites for the one-stop homeless assistance), 070399 (site selection for fleet garage) will be opened and rescheduled due to TS Fay. They will be rescheduled to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, September 2, 2008. Other items may also be rescheduled. 
RTS observes Labor Day Holiday, Monday, September 1
In observance of Labor Day, all RTS offices will be closed Monday, September 1, and there will be no RTS bus service. ADA paratransit service will not be running on this date, except for dialysis appointments.

RTS Providing Service until Sustained Winds Reach 39 mph
RTS will provide regular fixed route service and campus shuttle service during Tropical Storm Fay until sustained winds reach 39 mph. Shorty Football and Shorty Baseball are programs that have been designed for boys and girls ages 3 to 6. The Used Blues Band to Perform at Gainesville’s Free Fridays Concert Series on September 5
Used Blues, hailing from Gainesville, Florida, is a four-man group focused on performing the best of all forms of blues music. Sandbag Materials Available at Gainesville Public Works Center
In preparation for Tropical Storm Fay, the City of Gainesville Public Works Department is providing bags and sand to residents. Residents can fill bags with sand at the west end of the west parking lot of the Public Works Center, at 405 NW 39th Ave., from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. weekdays until further notice. Free Fridays Plaza Series Continues!
Cultural Affairs invites the public to join us for the Let’s Go Downtown Free Fridays Plaza Series, the annual series of family-friendly free concerts in the Downtown Community Plaza. Featuring some of the best local and regional musicians, this series runs through October and is highly anticipated by its many fans.     Flag Football Registration Begins on Monday, August 18
    The Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs is readying to begin registering boys ages 4 to 6 for flag football. Flag football is a version of American football where the rules are very similar to the professional game.     Girls Fall Softball is Ready to Begin!
    Girls Fall Softball registration began on August 1 and will continue through the end of the month. Fall softball will begin practice in September and will run through the month of November.     Buck Bay Mobile Home Relocation
    The City of Gainesville Housing Division is still accepting applications for its Displaced Mobile Home Owner/Tenant Assistance Program, which provides financial assistance to eligible residents to relocate from the Buck Bay Mobile Home Park.     Progressive Madness to Perform at Gainesville’s Free Fridays Concert Series on August 22
    Progressive Madness, a seven-member band from the Gainesville area, will play a concert of all original music at the Downtown Community Plaza Free Fridays series on August 22. According to band member Pateh Parsons, the group plays a variety of music, from rock ‘n’ roll to pop to rhythm and blues.     Folk Music Artist Tom Shed to Perform in Gainesville at a Thomas Center Sunday Showcase on August 24
    Florida native, singer-songwriter Tom Shed has played music all across the world for over 30 years. Performing on guitar and banjo throughout the U.S., Canada, the Caribbean, New Zealand and Australia, Tom also plays closer to home at Florida festivals such as the Florida Folk Festival, Will McLean Festival, Gamble Rogers Festival and Ravine Gardens Festival. Tom, a local Gainesville resident, last performed at the Thomas Center in Gainesville in 2006 and recorded his CD “Live at the Thomas Center” on that occasion.     Northwest 39th Avenue to Close for Two Weeks at Railroad Crossing

    8th Annual Regional Juried Exhibition at the Thomas Center
    The City of Gainesville Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs is pleased to announce the opening of the 8th Annual Regional Juried Art Exhibition which will run from July 12 - August 24, 2008 in the Thomas Center Main Gallery. A free public exhibition reception will be held Thursday, July 17, 2008 from 5 - 7PM. Awards will be presented at 6PM.
