The Office of the City Auditor is an independent appraisal activity that was established within the City of Gainesville through a Charter amendment in 1979. The responsibilities and administrative procedures of the City Auditor were later clarified and defined by resolution (see current Resolution 970187).

The mission of the City Auditor's Office is to promote honest, effective and fully accountable City government. The primary objective of the City Auditor's Office is to assist members of the City Commission and City management in the effective discharge of their responsibilities by furnishing them with analysis, appraisals, recommendations, counsel and information concerning the activities reviewed.

The City Auditor is appointed by and reports directly to the City Commission. The City Auditor's staff currently consists of an Assistant City Auditor, a Senior Auditor, two Staff Auditors and an Executive Assistant.

Brent Godshalk

brent_head.jpgBrent Godshalk was appointed City Auditor by the Gainesville City Commission in November 2004.  Brent graduated in 1981 "With Honors" from the University of Florida, receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting.  He began his professional career in a public accounting firm based in Orlando, Florida before coming to the City Auditor's Office in 1982.  He has previously served in the City Auditor's Office as Financial Auditor, Financial/EDP Auditor and, since 1989, as Assistant City Auditor. Brent is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE).  He is an active member of the Association of Local Government Auditors, the Institute of Internal Auditors, the Florida Audit Forum and the Florida Government Finance Officers Association.  He serves on the Board of Directors for the Florida Audit Forum and the North Central Florida Chapter of the Institute of Internal Auditors.  He can be contacted by e-mail at godshalkbl@cityofgainesville.org.

 

Eileen Marzak

Eileen_small.jpg Assistant City Auditor Eileen Marzak has been with the City of Gainesville since 1986, serving as Assistant City Auditor since 1989. Prior to joining the City, Eileen spent eight years in the public accounting sector in audit, taxation and management consulting.  Eileen holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting from the University of Florida and is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE).  Eileen serves on the Professional Issues Committee of the Association of Local Government Auditors (ALGA) and on the Program Committee for the North Central Florida Chapter of the IIA.  Eileen can be contacted by e-mail at marzakem@cityofgainesville.org.

Michelle Torma

Photo Comming soonSenior Auditor Michelle Torma has worked for the City of Gainesville since 1995. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Management from Albion College and a Masters in Public Administration from Oakland University. Michelle started her career as an internal auditor in the healthcare sector before moving to the retail sector. Her last position prior to joining the City was at Kmart Corporation as Supervisor of the International Headquarters Corporate Audit Division where she worked for several years. She currently serves on the Board of Governors for the North Central Florida chapter of the Institute of Internal Auditors. Michelle is a Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) , Certified Government Audit Professional (CGAP) and a Certified Internal Control Auditor (CICA). Brecka Anderson

Anderson,Brecka2.jpgStaff Auditor Brecka Anderson joined the City of Gainesville in 2008.  She received a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree in Marketing from Mississippi State University in Starkville, MS.  Brecka began her career in Internal Audit at the University of Florida.  Prior to that, she worked as a Field Auditor for General Electric CDF.  Brecka is a member of the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA).  She can be contacted by email at andersonbh@cityofgainesville.org.

Steve Thomas
S_Thomas.jpgStaff Auditor Stephen Thomas began working for the City of Gainesville in 2008.  He is a long-time resident of Gainesville and earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice (Criminology) from the University of Florida.  In 2005, he received a Bachelor of Business Administration (Accounting) from the University of North Florida in Jacksonville.  Prior to joining the City, Steve worked for three years at a regional public accounting firm in Jacksonville.  He can be reached by e-mail at thomassj@cityofgainesville.org.

Karen Haskell

comm_soon.gifExecutive Assistant Karen Haskell has worked for the City of Gainesville since 2000.  She graduated with honors from Santa Fe Community College earning an Associate of Science degree in Computer Science and received her Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration with a specialization in Management from Saint Leo College, graduating Summa Cum Laude.  Prior to her promotion to the City Auditor’s Office in 2006, she worked in Human Resources and the Office of Management and Budget.  Karen also serves as a member of the City’s CSD User’s Group and can be contacted by e-mail at haskellkl@cityofgainesville.org.
