Zoo: Santa Fe Community College students serve as tour guides through the forested trails of the only community college teaching zoo in the nation. Observatory: Stargazers can enjoy a close-up view at the moon, Saturn and Jupiter at the UF Teaching Observatory on Friday evenings. One large telescope and several smaller telescopes are available. Youth Recreation: The City of Gainesville provides recreational opportunities for youth ages 6 to 14. After school and summer programs are offered at the following centers. The Summer Recreation Programs begin in June and run through mid August. This is a Monday through Friday program from 9:00 to 5:00 p.m. There is no registration fee. The summer recreation program is offered at the following sites: Fred Cone Park, NE Liaison Center, Sharmie Ffar Playground, T. B. McPherson Complex, Union Academy (Rosa B. Williams Center), Woodlawn Park, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Multi-Purpose Center. The following school sites operate from the beginning of June until the beginning of August, Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., Howard Bishop Middle School, Lincoln Middle School, and Westwood Middle School. Also offered is a Summer Day Camp at the Westside Recreation Center for youth age 6 to 12. This program begins in June and runs until the middle of August.
