Visual Arts

Eight art galleries are sponsored by several different groups in Gainesville. The Thomas Center, Santa Fe Community College, the University of Florida, and the City of Gainesville are among the top sponsors of these galleries. The locations and areas of interest for each gallery are given below.

  • Thomas Center Galleries
    The Thomas Center Galleries exhibition programs are free of charge and open to the public. We are located at 302 NE 6th Ave. in Gainesville. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM, and Saturday and Sunday from 1:00 - 4:00 PM. The galleries are closed between shows and during observed holidays.   • Tench Building Art Studios
    This site has several open houses yearly to display works of the artists housed in the studios here. The City maintains these studios to rent to local artists who need space at a low monthly rate. To visit the studios, please set up an appointment by calling the number below.

SFCC Galleries

The Santa Fe Gallery was the first community college gallery in the nation to be approved by the National Gallery of Art and Smithsonian Institution for loans of high security exhibitions. Contemporary exhibits of regional and national artists are on display. Open 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Monday-Friday and 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. Sunday. Free admission. UF Galleries and Museums 

Three galleries on the University of Florida campus display a variety of artwork and are open to the public. The University Gallery in Fine Arts Building B exhibits contemporary art by local, national and international artists. Its hours are 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. Tuesday; 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Free admission.

The Focus Gallery in Fine Arts Building C displays work of students and emerging artists. Open Monday-Friday 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Free admission.

The Grinter Gallery in Grinter Hall specializes in international artwork. Open 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday-Friday. Free. Call (352) 392-0201 for more information about any of these three galleries.

The Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art opened in 1990 as an essential cultural resource of the University of Florida and is accredited by the American Association of Museums. The contemporary 86,800-square-foot museum is one of the largest visual arts facilities in Florida and among the largest university art museums in the southeastern United States. The Harn Museum collection currently consists of more than 7,000 works of art in various media. A vigorous acquisitions campaign is ongoing with an emphasis on Asian, African, modern American and European, and international contemporary art, as well as photography. The museum also features a cafe and education and meeting spaces.
