Nurse Practitioner

 

Andrea Johnson, MSN, ARNP

Professional Experience

Andrea is the City of Gainesville's Nurse Practitioner. She is an expert clinician with 20 total years of experience in the healthcare field, 17 years in the Occupational Medicine specialty and the last 14 years with the City of Gainesville. She anticipates receiving a Master’s of Pharmacy with a specialty in Forensic DNA & Serology degree at the University of Florida in December 2020. She is nationally certified by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners.

While working with the City of Gainesville she has served as the clinical expert and medical resource to multiple City policy development teams and has designed and implemented the current diabetes educational incentive program along with other wellness programs currently available to City of Gainesville employees. These programs allow for a decrease in insurance costs to employees and family members and increased wellness. She is currently the medical provider on staff for the City’s Urgent Care services and enjoys using each interaction to educate and inform her patients about ways to improve their health and wellness.

In her spare time she provides mentorship to nurses entering the career path and offers population specific health education seminars to community non-profit organizations.

Professional Experience

Shawn has been in the nursing profession for 28 years. 17 years at the City of Gainesville and the other years in Long Term Care and Family Practice.  She is currently enrolled in Chamberlain University’s Family Nurse Practitioner program and hopes to complete the program in June 2021.

Her long term goal is to one day practice medicine in her little rural hometown of Hawthorne.  She has a passion for helping those that are less fortunate than she is, along with the elderly population.  It is her desire to give to these populations that are often at a disadvantage and are deserving of so much more.

Hobbies: She enjoys traveling with her husband, spending time with family and of course shopping! She is married to Sandy Daniels. She has one daughter, Jasmine.

Janine Merritt, LPN

Janine has been a Licensed Practical Nurse since 2018. She is currently enrolled in school, scheduled to graduate December 2020 with her Associates of Science in Nursing Degree. She has plans to continue on her education to become an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner specializing in Midwifery. Her family is from California but she is the only one born and raised in Gainesville. She joined Employee Health Services in 2018, before that she worked in Digestive Health for 5 years. In her spare time she enjoys learning more about religion, health, wellness, skin care, and self-love. She also enjoys spending time with her family. She is happily married with two children.

Professional Experience

Gary is an expert and a leader in on-site injury care & prevention. He has 22 years of experience in the world of physical rehabilitation and 14 years of experience in ergonomic assessment. In addition, he is a certified workers’ comp healthcare professional, certified associate medical management safety specialist, and a certified corporate wellness coach. Also, he is an on-line class on-demand instructor for a class called ‘On-site Employee Injury Care’. Gary was featured in ADVANCE for Directors in Rehabilitation 2001, NATA NEWS 2005, HR Magazine 2008, and interviewed on NPR. He has spoken in St. Louis, Dallas, Anaheim, and Orlando. His research has been published in the Journal of Athletic Training 2002 and Isokinetics and Exercise Science 2004. At the University of Florida he instructed Prevention & Care of Athletic Injuries, Assessment of Athletic Injuries, Neuromuscular Physiology, Rehabilitative Techniques of Athletic Injuries. Prior positions include Research Assistant in the Department of Orthopedics, Shands; Head Athletic Trainer/Clinical Instructor at PK Yonge; Functional Medical Evaluator 2009-2014, among others. He interned with the inaugural USF Bulls football team in 1997 and volunteered with the Tampa Bay Storm arena football team. Also, he volunteered with the Walt Disney World marathon medical staff 2010. All of these experiences provided Gary with the expertise to assist in reducing back injuries at Gainesville Fire Rescure by about 300% within the first few years, provided the city with a positive return on investment, and was a part of the City of Gainesville’s platinum award winning wellness team as awarded by the Wellness Council of America 2002. The City of Gainesville was the first municipality to win this distinction.

Professional Experience

Rod is a Functional Strength and Conditioning and Wellness expert who is passionate about coaching people to healthier lifestyles (in a practical and meaningful way) as well as helping athletes improve their performance abilities. He has spent 8 years on the City of Gainesville Wellness Team and 10 years total with the city. Recently, he has expanded his professional portfolio by taking on the role of Enterprise Resource Planning Functional Business Lead for the Risk Management Department. Before joining the City of Gainesville, he worked in a variety of other health and fitness settings including: personal trainer (Gainesville Health and Fitness, 8 years), rehab tech (Gainesville Physical Therapy and Wellness, 4 years), and Strength and Conditioning Assistant (University of Florida, 1 year).

He is married to Nadia and has 4 kids (Jayla, Kamron, Davin, Aubrey).

Hobbies: spending time with family and friends, meeting new people, learning new things, being active, and coaching athletics.

Professional Experience

Wayne has been in the Fitness and Wellness industry since 2008 when he worked as an undergraduate intern for a faculty gym on the University of Florida campus. This ultimately turned into an assistantship allowing him to pursue his Master's while acting as a director for the gym. As he finished his Master's work, he accepted an internship with the City of Gainesville as a wellness intern. This eventually developed into a full-time position with the City. While working with the City, he earned his Corrective Exercise Specialist certification, which sparked an interest in learning more about musculoskeletal impairments. This led to him seeking further education and he is currently pursuing a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree at the University of St. Augustine.

He is married to Ingrid and they have 2 kids (Ethan and Selah).

Hobbies: ultimate frisbee, golf, fishing, working out, watching sports, and spending time with my family.

Wellness Intern

Daniel Khokhar

Daniel is a 4th year Applied Physiology and Kinesiology major at the University of Florida. Minoring in health disparities, he hopes to give back to those in need through medical care in the underserved communities. After his internship and graduation at UF, Daniel will be pursuing a medical degree from the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine. As our intern Daniel will be helping us provide the highest level of wellness and engagement to our employees to continue creating a happy and healthy work environment at the City of Gainesville.

Kevin Culpepper

Education

Associate's in Science, Western Michigan University

Professional Experience

Kevin is a professional, drug-free bodybuilder and a certified personal trainer. He studied at Western Michigan University, earning his Associate's degree in Science. Throughout the years, he has won several bodybuilding titles:

Mr. Michigan Challenge: 1st.
Masters Natural Olympia: 1st. 2005.
NPC Florida Championships Cup Masters: 1st. Open Division 1st 20016.
Masters Mr. Gainesville 1st
Mr. Gainesville Light heavy weight division 1st 2017.
Masters Southern natural pro classic 1st 2018.

He has also more recently achieved first place status in local bodybuilding competitions. His years of expertise has afforded him the privilege of training and preparing numerous clients for first place in bodybuilding competitions as well.

Kevin is married to his best friend, Mimi. They have 3 children, Kiemeisha, Blaine, and Christian.
