Historic Preservation Manual

The City of Gainesville’s Historic Preservation Rehabilitation & Design Guidelines provides detailed guidelines for the alteration, addition, rehabilitation or new construction of structures located in the five historic districts districts or listed individually on the Local Register. The guidelines also provide information about the history of Gainesville, the history of each district, as well as appendices cataloguing the city’s architectural periods and historic materials.

If you wish to make changes to a structure within a historic district or individually listed on the Local Register of Historic Places, please check with the City’s Department of Doing before starting work to determine if you need a Certificate of Appropriateness (COA). Please note: Prior to submission of any application for a COA, a pre-application conference must be held with the Historic Preservation Planner to determine what items should be in your application for a COA.
