Aquatic Leadership Camp

AGES: 11–14

Splash into Fun and Safety!

The purpose of the City of Gainesville’s Aquatic Leadership Camp program is to increase self-confidence and promote safe behavior in the aquatic environment. Throughout the course campers will learn a wide range of skills including First-Aid, CPR and rescue techniques. The program will encourage campers to take on leadership roles as well as challenge them mentally and physically. Besides learning the primary responsibilities of a lifeguard, this course is action-packed with fun activities, games, free swim and field trips!

 

Fees:  City Residents:  $87.00 / Non-City Residents: $ 130.50. A $25.00 field trip fees may apply.
Proof of residency (GRU Bill or Voter ID card) is required at time of registration.

  • Camp Session 1: Monday, June 10 through Friday 14
  • Camp Session 2: Monday, June 17 through Friday, June 21
  • Camp Session 3: Monday, June 24 through Friday, June 28
  • Camp Session 4: Monday, July 8 through Friday, July 12
  • Camp Session 5: Monday, July 15 through Friday, July 19
  • Camp Session 6: Monday, July 22 through Friday, July 26

 

Times: 8:30 am–5:30 pm,  (Please do not drop students off earlier than 7:45 am)

Prerequisites:

Campers attending the Aquatics Leadership camp must be able to swim and complete the following tasks before the first day of camp! Swim tests can be administered M-F between 4-7pm, please call the pool before coming.

 

  • 100 yard swim
  • 1 minute unaided float
  • Retrieval of a 10 pound brick from 8- 10 feet of water

All campers are required to bring their own lunch, snacks, goggles, sunscreen, tennis shoes, socks, towel and swimsuit.

Denim shorts or cut-offs are not allowed to be worn in the water. Due to the nature of the camp, it is required that all female participants wear a one-piece swimsuit.

Campers will have the opportunity to earn certification in CPR/First Aid but not in Lifeguarding or AED. Campers will receive a certificate of completion.

Lifeguard Clinic

This Lifeguard Clinic will introduce participants to skills including First-Aid, CPR and rescue techniques needed to complete the American Red Cross lifeguard certification in a slower-paced environment than our lifeguard class offerings. The program will center around the primary skills necessary to be a lifeguard, as well as the physical conditioning needed to do those skills. While it is not a lifeguard course, each participant will have the opportunity to earn a Lifeguard Certification, if they are able to pass all necessary assessments. 

Dates: Monday, July 30–Friday, August 3
Fee: $175 
Location: H. Spurgeon Cherry (Westside Pool), 1001 NW 31st Dr. 
Ages: 15–16 years old Hours: Mon.–Fri. 8:30 am–5:30 pm (Please do not drop students off earlier than 7:45 am)
Prerequisites: Participants must be able to swim and complete the following tasks before the first day! Swim tests can be administered Mon.-Fri. between 4:00-7:00 pm, at Northeast or Westside pools, please call the pool before visit. Northeast – 352-334-2191; Westside – 352-334-2187.

  • Retrieval of a 10-pound weight from 8–10 feet of water
  • All participants are required to bring their own lunch, snacks, goggles, sunscreen, tennis shoes, socks, towel and swimsuit. Denim shorts or cut-offs are not allowed to be worn in the water.
