Presented by the City of Gainesville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department, the nationally-recognized Downtown Festival & Art Show draws more than 100,000 visitors each year. As an Art Sponsor, you can make your name stand out among the crowd by pledging a minimum of $50 in advance toward the purchase of any piece of art. Join a tradition of artistic excellence by submitting an artist application for the 34th Annual Downtown Festival & Art Show. Recognized as one of the top fine art shows in the country, the festival is sponsored by the City of Gainesville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department. On Saturday, Nov. 14, and Sunday, Nov. 15, more than 240 artists will display original oils and acrylics, vibrant watercolors, captivating sculptures, dazzling jewelry, decorative ceramics and vivid photography in historic downtown Gainesville. They will compete for $19,000 in cash prizes and purchase awards. Applications for the Downtown Festival & Art Show are available upon request at 352-393-8536 or online at http://www.gvlculturalaffairs.org. The application deadline is Friday, May 4, 2015.

Bo Diddley Community Plaza has closed for renovations on Sunday, March 1. The improvements, which include new public restrooms, an information kiosk, a water wall entry feature, green room and a second café space, will take about one-year to complete. The entire plaza will be closed during construction except for the historic Bethel Station property on the south end, which will reopen under new restaurant ownership in late spring.

The 33rd Annual Downtown Festival & Art Show is proud to present this year’s poster artist, Kana Handel. The poster, “‘Round Midnight on the Prairie," showcases this local artist’s passion for storytelling, her love of nature and her admiration for her adopted hometown.

- On Thursday, June 12 at 5:30 p.m., the City of Gainesville and the Gainesville-Alachua County Cultural Affairs Board will unveil a plaque dedicating the artists' studios at the Historic Tench Building in the name of the late, beloved artist, Lennie Kesl, who had a studio there for many years, and was a friend and mentor of many who passed through its doors.

Coming off a string of recent spring music festivals such as the Purple Hatters Ball at the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park and the Orange Blossom Jamboree music and arts festival in Brooksville Florida, Wester Joseph’s Stereo Vudu returns to the Bo Diddley Community Plaza in downtown Gainesville Friday, May 23 at 8 p.m. for a special “Free Fridays” concert. The band has recently added a few new cover songs to spice up the set list and will introduce a few new songs from their upcoming EP due out later this summer.

Mick Marino, who has in past years organized notable “Free Fridays” tribute concerts, such as The Band (2013), The Rolling Stones (2012) and the Allman Brothers (2010 and 2011), has organized this season’s tribute to Bob Dylan. He has assembled an all-star cast of accomplished local musicians.
