Based on current or predicted weather conditions, observed conditions on site, or other factors, the Prescribed Burn Manager for the City of Gainesville, Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department, Nature Operations Division has cancelled the prescribed burn which had been scheduled for today. This cancellation is in accordance with safe management practices as defined by the Florida Forest Service and the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department.

The City of Gainesville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department is proud to announce it is coordinating an urban art project that is bringing internationally-renown, Italian urban muralist 2501 to Gainesville this week to transform the :08 Seconds building, located at 201 W. University Ave., with his unique artwork. The artist is anticipated to begin painting Thursday, June 18 and finish by Sunday, June 21. The creation of urban art is an event itself, and the public is invited to stop by the site and watch the artist create the mural.

The City of Gainesville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department, in cooperation with Shakerag Culture Center, Inc., is pleased to announce the upcoming Jewel Box Concert at the Historic Thomas Center Friday, June 19, featuring the legendary Tony Trischka and virtuoso fiddler Brittany Haas. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the concert starts at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $20 at the door - cash or check only, please.

Please be advised that the nature trail in Loblolly Woods Nature Park that connects NW 16th Avenue to the boardwalk is currently impassible due to large volumes of water and sediment washing down from the 16th Avenue construction.  This situation is being corrected by the contractor and monitored by Alachua County.  We apologize for any inconvenience.

The Thomas Center Galleries announce the opening of the BEAUTY & THE BEASTS, an expansive art exhibition to be presented in the Historic Thomas Center’s Main and Mezzanine galleries from Friday, June 26 to Saturday, Sept. 19. The opening reception for the exhibition is Friday, June 26 from 7-10 p.m. in conjunction with Gainesville’s downtown ArtWalk, and is free and open to the public.

The Sunshine State Games Swimming Championships will be held June 5-7, 2015, in Gainesville.  The meet is hosted by the Makos Aquatics of Gainesville, in partnership with the Gainesville Sports Commission.
