The City Beautification Board, the Community Redevelopment Agency, and the City of Gainesville Planning and Development Services and Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Departments, together with the Four Seasons Garden Club, invite the community to celebrate Florida Arbor Day Thursday, Jan. 19 from 12-1:30 p.m. The Florida Arbor Day celebration is at the A. Quinn Jones Museum, which is located at 1013 NW Seventh Ave.

The City of Gainesville Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs Department (PRCA) is gearing up for its third annual Great Invader Raider Rally held Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017. Formerly known as the Great Air Potato Round-Up, the rally continues a tradition that began more than 15 years ago as a community-wide day of service where volunteers of all ages work to remove non-native invasive plants from Gainesville’s natural areas.

The construction for renovating the lobby of Thomas Center Building B, located at 306 NE 6th Ave., will begin on December 27, 2016. The front entrance will be temporarily closed for approximately 6 weeks. The building can be accessed through the door to the left side of the building, which is also wheelchair accessible. The elevator will be in operation during the construction. Please check back for updates on construction as they become available.

The City of Gainesville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department hosts Downtown Countdown, a free outdoor New Year’s Eve celebration concert, in downtown Gainesville Saturday, Dec. 31 at 9 p.m. at Bo Diddley Plaza. Headlining the concert are The Couch Messiahs, who will play tribute to the music of numerous rock ‘n’ roll all-star bands including The Allman Brothers, The Band, Bob Dylan, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Neil Young and The Rolling Stones.

The City of Gainesville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department, in cooperation with Shakerag Culture Center, Inc., is pleased to announce the next Jewel Box Concert at the Thomas Center Tuesday, Dec. 20 featuring The Currys. Doors open at 6 p.m., and the concert begins at 7 p.m. Admission is $20 at the door day of the show (cash or check only) or presale tickets can be purchased online at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/2713514. This holiday performance showcases the release of The Currys new album, “West of Here.”

The City of Gainesville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs (PRCA) Department announced the 2017 winner of the newly created Michelle Park Family Recreation Scholarship. The purpose of the scholarship is to support a local family for one year which may have difficulty participating in the many nature, recreation and cultural activities available in the City of Gainesville.

Here’s something to cheer about! On Dec. 6, the City of Gainesville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department’s Gainesville Gators Pop Warner varsity cheerleading squad placed third in the nation in their division at the National Cheer and Dance Championships in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.

The City of Gainesville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department is pleased to announce the December lineup of Events on the Promenade at Depot Park, which is located at 200 SE Depot Ave., in Gainesville. Saturday evenings feature live music from 7-9 p.m., and Sundays feature family-friendly, hands-on activities from 2-4 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs and blankets and maybe a picnic to sit and relax.
