The City of Gainesville is closing the downtown Bo Diddley Community Plaza for renovation tentatively beginning March 1, 2015. Work to refurbish the plaza should be complete in 12 months. Scheduled events and programs that regularly occur at the plaza will be unable to use the facility during the renovation period, including the Union Street Farmers Market, which operates at the plaza Wednesday afternoons. Based on available space needs, feedback from farmers market representatives and city staff, city-owned parking lot no. 10, which is bounded by Southwest Second Street, Southwest First Avenue, Southwest First Street and Southwest Second Avenue was selected as the best alternative location.

On Dec. 12, the City of Gainesville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department’s (PRCA) Pop Warner Cheerleading squad, the Gator Midgets placed first in their division at the National Cheer and Dance Championships at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex™ in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. Not only did the squad win the title, they received the Spirit of Sportsmanship Award.

Canopy Climbers is a local adventure-based company specializing in tree climbing for fun and adventure. Canopy Climbers has received very favorable reviews from user groups. On Nov. 29, the City of Gainesville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department’s (PRCA) Pop Warner Cheerleading squads, the Gator Midgets placed first in the Regional Championships in Orlando, Florida. This is the second year a squad from the City of Gainesville has taken the regional title!

The Thomas Center Galleries will host an opening reception for the Gainesville Fine Arts Association 2014 Showcase exhibition Saturday, Dec. 6 from 6-8 p.m. The reception, which is free and open to the public, is part of the Historic Thomas Center’s annual Holiday Tree Lighting event. The exhibit runs in the Mezzanine Gallery through Saturday, Jan. 3, 2015.

The City of Gainesville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department, in cooperation with Shakerag Culture Center, Inc., is pleased to announce the next Jewel Box Concert at the Thomas Center Wednesday, Dec. 10. The concert will feature The Currys. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $15 at the door.
