Lifeguards representing the City of Gainesville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department (PRCA) competed in the statewide Annual Lifeguard Challenge presented by the Florida Aquatics Council, in conjunction with the American Red Cross. The competition was held Sunday, Sept. 13 at the Oviedo Aquatics Complex in Oviedo, Florida, and lifeguard teams from aquatic facilities all over Florida attended the competition to compete for the title of best lifeguards in the state!
The Florida Aquatics Council started the Lifeguard Challenge seven years ago as a means to bring together central Florida area lifeguards for a day of fun and competition, and since that time the event has expanded to a statewide reach. The mission of the Lifeguard Games is to provide camaraderie, education and skills display among all competing teams.
Competition was fierce throughout the day. Six events were judged and scored. The events consisted of challenging activities to demonstrate important lifeguarding skills, including shallow water spinal rescue and backboarding, unconscious submerged victim and deep-water spinal backboarding, team towel treading in the water, 30-second pool scanning and recognition and timed team relays with rescue tubes. The lifeguards also took part in fun, team-building exercises, such as timed t-shirt relays and a cardboard boat race that served as a non-scored tie-breaker event.
The PRCA team medaled in four out of the six events, bringing home two second place medals and two third place medals. Overall, the PRCA team placed fourth in the state!
“We’re very proud of our lifeguard team, especially considering it was our first time attending the competition,” says PRCA Recreation Supervisor Jeff Moffitt, “The team truly demonstrated their training and our department’s commitment to safety at our aquatic facilities and programs. We certainly look forward to competing next year!”
Members of the PRCA team consisted of team captain and aquatics recreation leader Zachary Frando and lifeguards Macy Stephens, Rosalee Alan, Audrey Moore, Nicole Outler, Matt Slason and Drew Shimansky. A photo of the team is available at https://flic.kr/p/yYsjFz.
