Porters Back-to-School Summer Block Party Saturday, Aug. 22
Families in the Porters neighborhood will say goodbye to summer and hello to the new school year with backpack giveaways, raffles, bounce houses, popsicles, music and more! Legacy of Hope is hosting its 4th Annual Back-to-School Summer Block Party Saturday, Aug. 22. The event will take place from 4-7 p.m. at the Porters Community Center, which is located on 512 SW Second Terrace.
Judge Walter M. Green and Lance F. Avera, Esquire will keynote the block party. The Gainesville Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) will host a brief welcome ceremony for the newly-constructed Southwest Fifth Avenue sidewalk and Porters gateway features, which face Sixth Street and South Main Street.
“Our goal is to get kids excited about the upcoming fall semester and reduce the strain on parents’ wallets by providing free school supplies,” said Gigi Simmons, event chair for Legacy of Hope. “This event brings families and the community together.”
The event is sponsored by Avera & Smith, Attorneys at Law; Trader Joe’s; Gainesville CRA, Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce; CareerSource of North Central Florida and more. The Alachua County Supervisor of Elections Office will also be in attendance registering voters.
A fundraiser to collect school supplies for this event will be hosted at First Magnitude Brewing Company Thursday, Aug. 13 from 6-9 p.m.
