Internationally acclaimed countertenor, Terry Barber to perform the next Jewel Box Concert at the Thomas Center

The City of Gainesville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department, in cooperation with Shakerag Culture Center, Inc., is pleased to announce the upcoming Jewel Box Concert at the Historic Thomas Center is Sunday, May 17th, featuring internationally acclaimed countertenor, Terry Barber. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the concert starts at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $15 at the door - cash or check only.

Internationally acclaimed countertenor, Terry Barber, is known for his extraordinary range both vocally and stylistically. As a past member of the multiple Grammy-winning ensemble Chanticleer, Terry was called “...the jewel in Chanticleer’s crown...” Terry has been a soloist for the best venues around the world, from the Metropolitan Opera and Carnegie Hall, to Moscow’s Svetlanov Hall, and has been a soloist on recordings for every major record label with a variety of artists from Madonna to the London Philharmonic.

With an extraordinarily broad vocal range and natural fluency in a wide range of musical styles, Terry Barber is a performer in a class by himself and has sung in 14 languages to date that includes his ability to sing baritone, alto, tenor, countertenor and soprano. He began his education as a double major in engineering and music at Northwestern University, and completed his masters degree in historically informed performance from Trinity College of Music, London. Barber has been awarded and completed coveted juried showcases at 7 conferences in the USA and Canada, and his upcoming tour has been selected to showcase at national and regional conferences including SouthArts, Live On Stage, Contact East, Manitoba, and Arts Northwest (after hours) this season. Barber has been selected by the Department of Culture to represent the State of Florida, as one of ten new tours to receive a state touring grant.

Guests are welcome to bring their favorite wine or champagne, and an attendant will tend their bottle. Plastic glasses will be provided, but guests are welcome to bring their own glassware as well. Authentic homemade Indian cuisine will be available for purchase.

The Jewel Box Concerts at the Thomas Center are a new series of multi-genre musical events staged in the historic Thomas Center’s Spanish Court. They will feature a spectrum of national and international touring artists from folk to classical and from jazz to bluegrass, with special holiday shows and surprise guests.

The Jewel Box Concerts at the Thomas Center are sponsored in part by the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture.
