Babyland Renewal Project to be Announced during Evergreen Cemetery Annual Meeting, Sunday, April 26

4/21/2015

The Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department and the Evergreen Cemetery Association of Gainesville, Inc. will host the association’s annual meeting at Evergreen Cemetery Sunday, April 26 at 1 p.m. This meeting is free and open to the public.

The Evergreen Cemetery Association of Gainesville, Inc. will announce the Babyland Renewal Project. The project aims to improve an area of the cemetery dedicated to the burial of infants. Two hundred eleven infants are interred in the area known as Babyland, and 165 of those are unmarked grave sites. The large number of these children died as infants or still-born from 1939 to 1960. This project will provide grave markers for every grave and a new granite monument. The monument is a carved angel with his arms wrapped around an inscribed tablet, which features prose written by Margaret Myers, illustrating the loss a parent experiences when losing a child. Further details about the research efforts and an overview of the project will announced at the annual meeting.

The Evergreen Cemetery Association of Gainesville, Inc. has been the advisory body to the City of Gainesville for the cemetery since 1994. This nonprofit association raises funds to support enhancements and programs related to this important community asset. The city took ownership of the cemetery in 1944 from the original Evergreen Cemetery Association, which had overseen the property since the 1880s. Evergreen Cemetery remains an active, working cemetery to this day, but also functions as an important heritage destination for those who wish to visit the final resting places of many of the region’s prominent historical figures.

Evergreen Cemetery is located at 401 SE 21st Ave. in Gainesville. Parking is available. The annual meeting is free and sponsored by the Evergreen Cemetery Association of Gainesville, Inc.
