A little history...

The Nature Centers Commission (NCC) assists the City Commission through recommendations and advice given in respect to developing programs, ordinances, use regulations and resource management policies as required to protect the nature parks and natural areas of the City of Gainesville. The board is consists of 12-members each serving 3-year terms; city residency is not required.

Each year, NCC presents the Annual Star Awards to recognize individuals, groups, businesses or organizations for their positive contribution to Gainesville's natural environment. Nominations are accepted in the categories of Star Volunteer, Star Good Neighbor, Star Green Business, and Amy Carpus Lifetime Achievement Award.

But who receives these awards?

There were three Star Volunteers honored in the 2019 Star Awards.  Maya Lahti was a regular volunteer with the Gainesville Greenway Challenge and volunteered nearly 72 hours in one year.  Maya also assisted with various other land management projects. Star Volunteers Steve Boissoneault and Susan Breier volunteered with Sweetwater Wetlands Park for several years serving more than 384 hours collectively.  Steve and Susan provided various services including keeping the boardwalks clean for park visitors, picking up trash, assisting with educational programs, maintaining trails for increased accessibility, and providing accurate and engaging information to park visitors.

The 2019 Star Good Neighbor Award was presented to the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice represented by Dollie Danielle Wygant, in recognition of their fourth year adopting a City of Gainesville nature park.  The program enabled at-risk youth to engage in meaningful service activities and also get outdoors to learn about and help the environment.
