Construction for Duval and New Reserve Parks Scheduled

2/28/2019

The City of Gainesville’s Wild Spaces & Public Places Department (WSPP) in conjunction with the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department will begin construction on two significant park improvement projects this March and are expected to be completed in fall 2019.

Duval Park (520 NE 21st St.)

Repair work in Duval Park will consist of replacement of 959 linear feet of boardwalk that was damaged from fallen trees during Hurricane Irma and wood rot. Akea, Inc. will oversee the work with construction being done by Diversified Professional Service Corporation of Dade City, FL.  The boardwalk replacement is being funded through the WSPP half-cent sales tax and the Capital Improvement Fund.

New Reserve Park (700 NE 11th St.)

The new Reserve Park will honor service members from all branches of the military and their families by providing a military-themed recreational space that was formerly the home of the local U.S. Army Reserve.  Park features will include modern playground equipment, a boot camp-themed obstacle course with 13 fitness stations, a pavilion, benches, picnic tables, grills, a walking path, open green space, landscaping and a fenced community garden.

Since 2012, public meetings, workshops, online surveys and social media have been part of the planning process to introduce public sentiment into the design of the park and the amenities which would best fit the surrounding neighborhood.  The $835,400 project will be constructed by Anglin Construction Company of Gainesville, FL. Funding for this project is through the WSPP half-cent sales tax, the Reserve Park CIP fund, Public Works’ sidewalk fund (for sidewalk on NE 11th St.) and the tree mitigation fund (for tree plantings).
