The City of Gainesville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department, in cooperation with Shake Rag Cultural Center, Inc., once again welcomes Americana singer/songwriter Verlon Thompson to the next Jewel Box Concert at the Thomas Center on Friday, Sept. 21.
Doors open at 6 p.m., and the concert begins at 7 p.m. General admission is $20, and VIP seating is $30 at the door. Seating is limited, but tickets may be purchased in advance online at www.evansmediasource.com.
Thirty years as a professional songwriter and traveling troubadour serve as Thompson’s credentials. As a solo performer, and as the trusted sidekick of Texas Americana songwriting icon Guy Clark, Thompson has viewed the world from stages far and wide, everywhere from Barcelona to his hometown in Binger, Oklahoma.
"We have never worked with anyone who is more loved, both off stage as well as on stage. We are all so thrilled about his return to our Jewel Box Concert series,” says Ernie Evans, Vice President of Shake Rag Cultural Center, Inc.
Along the way, Verlon Thompson’s compositions have been recorded by Jimmy Buffett, Alan Jackson, Anne Murray, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Kenny Rogers, Randy Travis, Del McCoury, Sam Bush, Trisha Yearwood and many more. Equally important in his songwriting and live performances is Thompson's guitar work, which cannot go unnoticed. His guitar can be heard on recordings by various award-winning artists including Restless Heart, Pam Tillis and, most notably, Guy Clark. Thompson co-produced Guy Clark's Grammy-nominated album "Cold Dog Soup," as well as "The Dark," "Workbench Songs" and "Somedays the Song Writes You." As the in-house musician for Genuine Human Productions (genuinehuman.com), Thompson also scores themes and background music for various documentaries and special film projects. These days, Verlon Thompson is either on the road, in the studio or writing in his bunkhouse on the river in Tennessee, but he is never far from the fertile plains of Oklahoma.
