Learn Water Safety Skills and Have Fun with Aquatic Leadership Camp!

The City of Gainesville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department (PRCA) is pleased to announce the 2018 Aquatic Leadership Camp registration is open. This exciting week-long summer camp is offered for youth 11-14 years old, with six sessions available at H. Spurgeon Cherry (Westside) Pool, starting June 11.

The Aquatic Leadership Camp program encourages campers to take on leadership roles, as well as mental and physical challenges. All campers learn the primary responsibilities of a lifeguard. Those passing all modules will have the opportunity to earn an American Red Cross certification in First Aid/CPR/AED.

This camp is action-packed with fun activities, games and, of course, swimming! Demonstrations include duties of professional lifeguards and other community safety officers. Campers will have the opportunity to explore local springs and natural areas during fun and memorable field trips.

Campers attending the Aquatic Leadership Program must be able to swim and complete the following tasks before the first day of camp: a 100-yard swim, one-minute unaided float and retrieve a 10-pound weight from 8–10 feet of water. Swim tests may be administered Monday-Friday between 4-7 p.m. at either the Northeast Pool (352-334-2191) or Westside Pool (352-334-2187). Please call the pool before coming.

The registration fee is $87 for city residents and $130.50 for non-city residents. Proof of residency, a GRU bill or voter ID card, is required at time of registration.
