The “Free Fridays” Concert Series, as part of its celebration of June as African American Music Appreciation Month, presents 21 Blue with Longineu Parsons and Ted Shumate Friday, June 9 from 8-10 p.m. at the Bo Diddley Plaza. The public is invited to bring their blankets and lawn chairs to our beautiful downtown amphitheater and enjoy this free world-class Blues concert that will take you from Louis Armstrong to Howlin’ Wolf to Miles Davis to Jimi Hendrix and beyond.

The Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department (PRCA) is excited to announce the 2017 Gainesville Dash & Splash Summer Series race schedule. If you want to test your athletic ability or reach a new goal, then lace up for this exciting series of races!

The Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department, in cooperation with Shake Rag Cultural Center, Inc., is pleased to announce the next Jewel Box Concert at the Thomas Center Friday, June 2. The concert features the return of international touring artists Flagship Romance.  Doors open at 6 p.m. Flagship Romance performs at 7 p.m. Admission is $20 at the door - cash or check only, please. The Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department (PRCA), in partnership with the Neighborhood Housing & Development Corporation (NHDC) and Lowe’s Home Improvement, and with the help of many eager volunteers, will participate in a park cleanup and makeover in celebration of NeighborWorks Week.

The start of the 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season begins next week on June 1. The forecasts for this year’s hurricane season predict an average year, but remember it does not take an active season to make it a devastating one. Hurricane Andrew (1992) and Hurricane Katrina (2005) both occurred during hurricane seasons that were predicted to be slow to average.

A celebration of African-American Music Appreciation Month occurs every Friday night in June at the Bo Diddley Plaza as part of the “Free Fridays” concert series. Inspired by the dream of late local musicians Richard Baxter and Roland Burns, African-American Music Appreciation Month has been celebrated in Gainesville since 1998.

The Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department is pleased to announce the June lineup of Events on the Promenade at Depot Park, which is located at 200 SE Depot Ave., in Gainesville.
