The City of Gainesville, Alachua County, the Gainesville Housing Authority and Alachua County Housing Authority are in the process of drafting a Joint Assessment of Fair Housing (AFH). As such, they are conducting a series of community meetings in conjunction with the preparation of the AFH, which is an analysis of fair housing data, fair housing issues and contributing factors, and an identification of fair housing priorities and goals to affirmatively further fair housing in the region as required under the federal Fair Housing Act and local Human Rights Ordinances.

The City of Gainesville has been awarded a Small Matching Category grant from the Department of State’s Division of Historical Resources for fiscal year 2017-2018 in the amount of $40,600. The grant will be used to support a comprehensive survey of mid-century neighborhoods and buildings and to update the city’s existing Historic Preservation Rehabilitation & Design Guidelines. The project will be a collaborative effort between the City of Gainesville Department of Doing, Planning Division, the University of Florida’s Historic Preservation Program and local non-profit organization Gainesville Modern.

The High Nooners are playing at the “Free Fridays” All-American Song Fest Friday, July 7 at Bo Diddley Plaza. For the past 10 years, “Free Fridays” has hosted the All-American Song Fest on the first Friday in July to commemorate America’s independence with a celebration of American Music.

Closing out the celebration of June as national African-American Music Appreciation Month, “Free Fridays” hosts popular reggae band, De Lions of Jah, to play a concert Friday, June 30 at 8 p.m. The Jacksonville, Florida band has been dubbed “the best reggae band in Duval County.”

The online portal to pay parking decals and tickets will be unavailable from 7 p.m. Thursday, June 22 to 9 a.m. Monday, June 26.

The City of Gainesville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department (PRCA) is excited for the first race of the 2017 Gainesville Dash and Splash Summer Series! This year’s series features some new routes and different formats for each race.

The first race takes place Saturday, June 24 at Depot Park, which is located at 200 SE Depot Ave. This race starts at the park, with a running route of 1.5 miles along the Gainesville-Hawthorne Trail to the Andrew R. Mickle Sr. Pool for a 300-yard swim, then a return run back to Depot Park.

Don’t wait - sprint to enter! When you register early (more than two days before the race), you’ll save money and receive a unique t-shirt for each race. The entry fee for each race for early registration (more than two days before the race) is only $18.25 for city residents and $24.25 for non-residents. After early registration ends, the fees are $24.25 for city residents and $36.25 for non-residents. Proof of residency, a GRU bill or voter ID card is required at time of registration.
