The Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department, in cooperation with Shakerag Culture Center, Inc., is pleased to announce the upcoming Jewel Box Concert at the Thomas Center, Friday, June 24 at 7:30 p.m. featuring the legendary Tony Trischka and virtuoso violinist Shad Cobb. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the concert starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 at the door the day of the show (cash or check only).
Tony Trischka was the recipient of the International Bluegrass Music Association’s (IBMA) award for banjo player of the year in 2007 and the United States Artists Fellows in 2012. Trishka is considered to be the consummate banjo artist, and perhaps the most influential banjo player in the roots music world. For more than 45 years, Trishka’s stylings have inspired a whole generation of bluegrass and acoustic musicians, and he's renowned for mentoring the great Bela Fleck. Shad Cobb’s present-day virtuosity puts him at the forefront of top fiddlers in the country. Cobb began playing the fiddle at the age of 13, and has recorded with some of Nashville’s top artists, including the Osborne Brothers, Marty Raybon and country music icon Willie Nelson.
The Tony Trischka/Shad Cobb duo performance launches the Jewel Box summer bluegrass concert series. The series consists of five incredible groups with multiple Grammy awards between them. The Jewel Box summer bluegrass concert series is five consecutive Friday evenings beginning on June 24 with the Trischka/Cobb duo, followed by The Gatorbone Band on July 1, Nothin’ Fancy on July 8, Claire Lynch on July 15 and the Lonesome River Band on July 22. Individuals interested in attending all five concerts can purchase tickets for the series online at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/2503461 and receive a $20 discount.
