City of Gainesville Kicks Off the Holidays December 4

The City of Gainesville celebrates the season with an evening of special events at two downtown venues.

Holiday Kick-off Concert

When: Saturday, Dec. 4 from 4:30-5:30 p.m.
Where: Bo Diddley  Plaza, 111 E. University Ave.

This family-friendly concert by Bears and Lions features Gainesville area musicians assuming the roles of their animal alter egos. The performance is followed by the return of the city’s annual holiday lights festivities at its downtown cultural landmark.

Holiday Light Celebration

When: Saturday, Dec. 4 from 6-8 p.m.
Where: The Historic Thomas Center, 302 N.E. 6th Ave.

The event begins in the Thomas Center’s gardens with a call for the holiday lights to be lit, followed by a light show on the front lawn. Afterward, holiday music is performed by Jim and Joyce Lillquist of the Gypsy Guerrilla Band, and carols sung by the Singers of Reformation and the Gainesville Harmony Show Chorus.

Neighbors also can enjoy the holiday decorations on the giant tree inside the Historic Thomas Center and around the building, provided annually by the Thomas Center Associates. The luminarias at the center and throughout the adjoining neighborhood, are placed annually by the Duckpond Neighborhood Association. The association will offer horse and wagon rides for a $5 donation per person.

The events are free and open to the public. To help ensure public health and safety, neighbors are asked to practice social distancing at the events.
