“Free Fridays” Concert Series Presents Gypsy Jazz Band Hot Club de Ville Friday, May 17
The Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department presents Gypsy jazz band Hot Club de Ville Friday, May 17 from 8-10 p.m. at Bo Diddley Plaza in downtown Gainesville. The public is invited to bring their blankets and lawn chairs to our beautiful downtown amphitheater and enjoy this free concert under the stars.
Hot Club de Ville plays in the style of Django Reinhardt and the Quintette du Hot Club de France. Quintette du Hot Club de France was a jazz group founded in France in 1934 by guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stéphane Grappelli. One of the earliest and most significant jazz groups in Europe, the Quintette was described as "one of the most original bands in the history of recorded jazz." Their most famous lineup featured Reinhardt, Grappelli, bassist Louis Vole and rhythm guitarists Roger Kaput and Joseph Reinhardt (Django’s brother), who filled out the ensemble's sound and added occasional percussive effects.
Over fifty years after Django’s death, the Hot Club concept is bigger than ever worldwide. Hot Club de Ville includes founding member Marty Liquori (guitar), Conrad Olberg (guitar) Geoff Fitzhugh Perry (violin) and Chris Christensen (bass).
Free Fridays is funded in part by a Tourist Development Tax Grant from the Alachua County Board of County Commissioners, in conjunction with the Alachua County Tourist Development Council.
