First Annual Herman “Pop” Williams Peaceful Sunday Family Fest Scheduled April 21

The First Annual Herman “Pop” Williams Peaceful Sunday Family Fest is Sunday, April 21 from 2-7 p.m. at Citizens Field and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Center (1028 NE 14th St.). This is a collaboration between the City of Gainesville, the organizers of Peaceful Sundays and Duval community members to provide a fun, safe, family-friendly event.

For more than 30 years, Peaceful Sundays has served as a community gathering and celebration in the Duval community. In years past, the crowd has grown to nearly 5,000 and created challenges for the neighborhood residents and safety concerns for the Gainesville Police Department. City officials understand the importance of such community events and began discussions with the organizers to see how the event could continue in a way that respected the event’s storied history, while acknowledging liabilities and concerns.

“This event has outgrown its previous location, but we acknowledge that this is a long-standing tradition and one we wish to help continue for years to come,” said interim City Manager Deborah Bowie.

The family-friendly event features fun and activities for all including a basketball tournament, a kids station with bounce houses, face painting, food vendors, flag football and a car show. Gainesville police officers and security officers will be on site to direct traffic and help with parking. The event is free to the public.
