Summer Heatwave Concludes with Championship Games and Pool Party

The Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department (PRCA) draws another successful Summer Heatwave program to a close by featuring two great events. Several coed basketball championship games will be played Thursday, Aug. 3  at the Martin Luther King Jr. Multipurpose Center (MLK)  and a Back-to-School Pool Party will take place at Dwight H. Hunter Pool (Northeast) Saturday, Aug. 5.

This year, the Summer Heatwave Coed Basketball League served more than 500 youth from the age of 11-18, while dozens of other participants had fun in Teen Lounges provided at the MLK Center. Two other Pool Parties had several hundred youth in attendance. Summer Heatwave is a partnership between PRCA and the Gainesville Police Department (GPD), the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office and the State Attorney’s Office 8th Judicial Court Circuit. The program is designed to encourage positive engagement for youth with their community and members of law enforcement, while having fun with friends.

Come see some great basketball games at the MLK Center, located at 1028 NE 14th St. Thursday, Aug. 3. These games are the culmination of hard teamwork that has been happening since mid-June. The basketball leagues were so popular, teams from as far away as Hawthorne came out. The highlight game is the 18 & Under Champions vs. the GPD All-Star team.
