The City of Gainesville, Alachua County, the Gainesville Housing Authority and Alachua County Housing Authority are in the process of drafting a Joint Assessment of Fair Housing (AFH). As such, they are conducting a series of community meetings in conjunction with the preparation of the AFH, which is an analysis of fair housing data, fair housing issues and contributing factors, and an identification of fair housing priorities and goals to affirmatively further fair housing in the region as required under the federal Fair Housing Act and local Human Rights Ordinances.
Every five years, entitlement communities (such as the City of Gainesville) and public housing authorities are required by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to complete an AFH. The City of Gainesville, the Gainesville Housing Authority and the Alachua County Housing Authority are required to take meaningful actions, to combat discrimination, to overcome patterns of segregation and to foster inclusive communities free from barriers that restrict access to opportunity based on race, color, religion, sex, familial status, national origin, disability, age, sexual orientation, or gender identity/expression.
The City of Gainesville and Alachua County are holding public meetings to inform residents and stakeholders about the AFH, as well as provide an opportunity for all to participate in the fair housing planning process and provide feedback on fair housing issues in the region. The City of Gainesville encourages those living or working in Gainesville or Alachua County; housing, social service, and healthcare providers; realtors; lenders; educators; and other stakeholders to attend the public meetings and provide input. The meetings are as follows:
