Bulla Cubana and 352walls Feature Cuban Street Artists

3/27/2017
Gainesville’s 352walls/Gainesville Urban Art Initiative and Bulla Cubana, the Cuban arts and culture festival that has been taking place throughout the area, have retained a talented duo of Cuban-born artists to create a spectacular mural to commend the recent change in diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Cuba.

Leading the 352walls project is internationally-acclaimed artist Juan Travieso, who was raised in the U.S. and travels the world creating murals and other works of art. Joining Travieso is Miguel Machado, who has lived in Havana, Cuba all his life and has been singled out as one of the most talented emerging visual artists of his generation. Both are successful millennials who are passionate about street art. Their creation complements 352walls’ mission to position Gainesville as a vibrant cultural destination, stimulate urban renewal, foster tourism and economic development, beautify the urban landscape, boost community pride and serve as a platform for urban art studies.

The public is invited to stop by the Walker Furniture store, located at 113 NW Eighth Ave. in downtown Gainesville, to meet and watch Travieso and Machado, the new “Duo Cubano,” as they design and create their mural Friday, March 31 and Saturday, April 1 between 1-5 p.m.

The 352walls/Gainesville Urban Art Initiative is produced by the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department, Cultural Affairs Manager Russell Etling and 352walls Project Coordinator Raquel Vallejo. The 352walls curatorial committee includes Anne Gilroy, Bill Bryson, Craig O’Neil, Julia Morrisroe and Kerry Oliver-Smith.

The 352walls/Gainesville Urban Art Initiative is supported by the Gainesville Community Redevelopment Agency, the Gainesville-Alachua County Art in Public Places Trust, the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs, the Council on Arts and Culture, University of Florida School of the Arts + Art History, Gainesville Florida Community Design Center, Gainesville Arts & Parks Foundation, Artwalk Gainesville, National Institute of Urban Art, Héctor Framing & Gallery, Bulla Cubana and more.
