Stephen Foster Neighborhood Update on Cabot/Koppers Superfund Site Remediation Scheduled

The Stephen Foster Neighborhood Association invites members and residents of the Stephen Foster neighborhood and interested members of the public to attend an update meeting on the Cabot Carbon/Koppers Superfund site remediation. The meeting will be held at Thursday, Jan. 12 at 6 p.m. at the Parkview Baptist Church voting room, which is located at 3403 NW 13th St. in Gainesville. Attendees will receive updates on the Cabot Carbon/Koppers Superfund site remediation, an EPA grant funding project to study future redevelopment in the vicinity and remediation activity associated with the northeast lagoon.

Representatives from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP), Beazer East, Alachua County Environmental Protection Department (ACEPD) and the City of Gainesville are expected to present or attend the meeting. USEPA representatives include Regional Manager Scott Miller, Project Manager Rusty Kestle and the new Community Involvement Coordinator Abena Ajanaku. Kelsey Helton will represent FDEP and Mitch Brourman will attend on behalf of Beazer East. Gus Olmos from the Alachua County Environmental Protection Department and members of Gainesville’s city staff will represent local government.

A similar public presentation is being scheduled for the City Commission at a later date. Tomorrow night’s meeting is an opportunity for the public to meet the key stakeholders, ask questions and learn more about the status of remediation efforts and potential redevelopment projects in the area.
