The City of Gainesville, Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs offers a wide variety of programming for those who are 60 and over.  Come join the fun!!!  The benefits of recreation in your life are endless, and it all "Starts in Parks".

Good Health for Older Adults...It Starts in Parks: 

Participants in community-based senior wellness programs had signigicantly higher endurance levels, even after controlling their level of physical activity.

Active Senior Day Program

Age 60 and older and need something to do during the week?  Come out and join us at the Thelma Boltin Center every weekday from 8:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.  We offer a variety of activities including art/crafts, movies, board games, BINGO, knitting, exercise, guest speakers, bridge and more.  Eldercare of Alachua County provides free hot lunch to all who qualify.  You must pre-register for the program at the Thelma Boltin Center between 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.  The cost of the program is free.  For additional information please call (352)334-2103.

Senior Yoga Class

Exercise with us! This is a low impact exercise class that is video instructed. This yoga program is designed so that seniors can safely participate at their own comfort level. Yogo promotes both physical and mental health benefits.

TreeTown Bridge @ Albert "Ray" Massey Recreation Center

The Tree Town Bridge Club meets on the 1st & 3rd Friday of each month (there are no meetings during the summer of on holidays) from 9:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.  Bridge activites are free and open to the public. For additional information you can contact  Albert "Ray" Massey Recreation Center

Senior Exercise Program

Exercise with us! This is a low impact exercise class in which you use chairs for sitting and balance. This class helps seniors to build strength, stamina, and increase flexibility. Art for Seniors Class

In this class, participants will work on learning new art skills and sharing ideas with one another.  This is a social group setting with no instructor. Participants bring their own projects to the class to work on and share with others.  The class meets every Tuesday morning from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at Albert "Ray" Massey Recreation Center.  Classes are free and open to the public.

Take a Trip Down Memory Lane

 Do you enjoy reminiscing, reading, and/or writing about the past?  If so, this is the class for you.  Participants will help create a memoir legacy for their family.   It is requested that you provide some of your own materials and supplies, however, there will be some on hand for those who forgot.  For additional information please contact the Thelma Boltin Center at 352-334-2103.

Senior Ceramics

Do you like to create, shape and paint? Albert "Ray" Massey Recreation Center offers an adult group setting where you learn to fire and paint various types of ceramics.  You can work at your own pace while socializing with others. All skill levels are welcome.  The class meets every Monday morning from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. and on Wednesdays from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.

Nimble Fingers Knitting Club

Do you enjoy knitting? This club is for you. Seniors knit socialize and create baby blankets to donate to the area hospitals. Come join the fun, meet new friends and give back to the community.  The program is free, however it is requested that you provide some of your own materials and supplies.  Join us on Thursdays from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the Thelma Boltin Center located at 516 N.E. 2nd Avenue.  For more information please call the Thelma Boltin Center at 352-334-2103.

Wood Carving at Westside Recreation Center

In this class, participants will work on learning new carving skills and sharing ideas with one another.  This is a social group setting where participants work on their own carving projects.  The class meets every Thursday from 12:00 pm until 2:00 p.m at Albert "Ray" Massey Recreation Center.

Family Genealogy Project

Discover your family history. Newcomers Bridge

The Gainesville Newcomers Bridge Club meets on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at Albert "Ray" Massey Recreation Center.  Bridge activites are free and open to the public.  If you want to learn how to play Bridge, or if you want to meet other Bridge players, then this program is for you.
