Welcome to the Public Works Department Home Page.  The City's vision is to set the standard of excellence for a top ten mid-sized American city recognized nationally as an innovative provider of high-quality cost effective services.  Toward this goal, the Department achieved national accreditation from the American Public Works Association in December 2007 with several individual practices and two chapters, the Emergency Management and Organization and Strategic Planning Chapters, receiving Best Management Practices designations.

Teresa Scott, P.E., serves as the Director of Public Works and provides leadership to Administrative Services, Transportation Planning, Engineering Services, Environmental Management, PW Operations, Traffic Operations, Solid Waste Management and the Regional Transit System.  Several award winning programs are provided by the Department including the public outreach efforts led by Sally Adkins as the Coordinator of the Clean Water Parternership jointly funded by the City of Gainesville, Alachua County and the Florida Department of Transportation.

FDOT Main Street reconstruction may begin in 2009
The State of Florida Department of Transportation plans to resurface and reconstruct from Depot Avenue to Northwest 8th Avenue (1 mile), converting the four-lane roadway to two lanes with a center turn lane, bike lanes, on-street parking and mast arms at the signalized intersections.
