Vote Today in the City of Gainesville Elections

Be sure to vote today in the City of Gainesville elections. A new mayor and commissioner for district 4 are on the ballots today. The polls close at 7 p.m. For information about the candidates, districts, polling locations, etc., please visit the Supervisor of Elections Web site. You will also be able to view live results on that site after 7 p.m. tonight.

Poison Prevention Week

National Poison Prevention Week, March 14 through March 20, is a week designated to highlight the dangers of poisonings and how to prevent them. GFR is opening the doors of fire stations throughout the city next week to provide educational and informative opportunities on the dangers of poisonings.

Community Workshop on the Senior Recreation Center

Gainesville City Commissioner Scherwin Henry is pleased to invite District 1 residents to a community workshop on the Senior Recreation Center proposed for construction at Northside Park near Northwest 34th Street and State Road 441. The workshop will occur at 6 p.m. on Monday, March 22 at the Springhill Missionary Baptist Church, located at 120 SE Williston Rd. in Gainesville.

A. Quinn Jones Home Listed in the National Register of Historic Places
The A. Quinn Jones Home, located at 1013 NW 7th Ave., is now officially listed in the National Register of Historic Places. A. Quinn Jones, Sr. (1893-1997) was a teacher, educational leader and prominent African-American advocate, who lived here from 1925 to 1997.

Albert "Ray" Massey Citizen Volunteer Award

On Thursday, March 18, 2010, the Public Recreation and Parks Board will present the Albert “Ray” Massey award to citizen volunteers who have made outstanding efforts to promote recreational activities in the City of Gainesville.

The Thomas Center Galleries Presents Mind, Body, Soul Art Exhibition
The Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs announces the opening of the Mind, Body, Soul art exhibition, which is scheduled to run March 20 – May 9, 2010 in the Thomas Center Main Gallery. A free public reception will be held Thursday, March 25 from 5 - 7 p.m. at the Thomas Center.

The Thomas Center Galleries Presents the Alachua County K-12 Schools Art Exhibition

The City of Gainesville Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs announces the opening of the Alachua County K-12 Schools art exhibition, which will run Saturday, March 6 - Sunday, April 11, 2010 in the Thomas Center Mezzanine Gallery. A free public reception and award ceremony will be held Tuesday, March 23 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. at the Thomas Center. The awards will begin at 7 p.m. followed by refreshments.

Dismantling Racism Initiative Film Series Continues

The City of Gainesville Office of Equal Opportunity, along with the Dismantling Racism Change Team, is sponsoring the community initiative Dismantling Racism: A Community Initiative on Race & Race Relations, a five-year effort that addresses race and racism, including institutional racism in the City of Gainesville.

Town Hall Meeting: Preventing Underage Drinking: It's Everyone's Issue

The Partners In Prevention of Substance Abuse Community Coalition and the University of Florida are hosting a Town Hall Meeting to address underage drinking. Staff is encouraged to attend on Thursday, March 25 from 6-7:30 p.m. at Lincoln Middle School in the auditorium. This event, which is open to the community, will increase community awareness on the issue of underage drinking as well as provide resources. Attendees will be eligible to win prizes.
