Permit Application Process

The Building inspection Department is in the process of implementing online permitting, inspection scheduling and Digital Plan Review.  We are currently testing the different modules and will need participants to test these systems.  If you are interested in participating in the test program, please contact John Lake at lakeja@cityofgainesville.org with your contact information (Phone # and E-mail address).  You can view the permit access system by selecting the Public Permit Access option on the left side bar.  If you are not familiar with the operation of our Public Permit Access program, please view the tutorial, or contact our customer service staff at (352) 334-5050.

Building Permit Fees

Building permit fees are determined by city ordinance and are located in Annex A of the City of Gainesville Code of Ordinances.  The entire Code of Ordinances can be viewed on-line on the Municode website at http://library.municode.com/index.aspx?clientId=10819  The list of building permit fees is available here and will provide an estimate of any permitting fees.  (Actual permitting fees may vary depending on your specific situation and plan review requirements. )

Permitting Options

Fax Permitting

In an effort to provide greater access and convenience to our customers the Building Department will accept FAX permits for the following permit types; Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing permits that do not require a separate plan review. In order to take advantage of this program you must be a licensed contractor, registered with the City of Gainesville, and follow the procedures listed below;

  1. Submit the original notarized Letter of Credit Authorization to the Building Inspection Department. This document shall have the signature of the person authorized for credit card transactions, the printed name of the signing party and the FAX number for the company. (See the sample Letter of Credit Authorization in the forms section of this website.)  After the Letter of Credit Authorization has been reviewed and approved the company can begin to FAX permit applications.
  2. Each permit application shall consist of the Mail-in/FAX Permit Application and appropriate permit fee schedule worksheet. These can be obtained in person from the Building Inspection Department, or may be printed from the forms section of this website. You must contact one of our permitting specialists to verify the permit fees are correct  prior to submitting applications.(352)334-5050
  3. Once the application is received in our office it will be reviewed and processed during normal business hours.
  4. The permit will be faxed to you at the number you provided.

Mail-in Permitting

 In order to take advantage of this program you must be a licensed contractor, registered with the City of Gainesville, and follow the procedures listed below;

  1. Each permit application shall consist of the Mail-in/FAX Permit Application and appropriate permit fee schedule worksheet. These can be obtained in person from the Building Inspection Department, or may be printed from the forms section of this website. You must contact one of our permitting specialists to verify the permit fees are correct prior to submitting applications. (352)334-5050
  2. If paying by credit card, submit the original notarized Letter of Credit Authorization to the Building Inspection Department. This document shall have the signature of the person responsible for credit card transactions, the printed name of the signing party and the  FAX number for the company. (See the sample Letter of Credit Authorization in the forms section of this website.) 
  3. If paying by check make the check payable to “City of Gainesville”.
  4. Provide a signed copy of the appropriate checklist for the type of permit you are requesting.
  5. Provide two (2) sets of plans and submittal data meeting the requirements of the checklist. If the project is for a fire protection system you must provide three (3) copies of the plans and submittal data.
  6. Where a signature is required, the signature shall be notarized.  

In-Person

When the contractor is not registered with the City of Gainesville, or where the applicant is a homeowner, the permit application shall be applied for in person at the Building Inspection Department, 306 NE 6th Ave., Building B, Gainesville, FL 32602.
