Helen K. Warren was born in Bangor, Maine and moved the same year to St. Petersburg, Florida. Helen came to Gainesville in 1975 to attend UF, where she received a BA in Sociology in 1978. She worked for a year at the Alternative School as an office assistant and then returned to UF for graduate study in Community Education and Post-secondary Education. She received an M.Ed. in Post-secondary Education in 1981.
Helen lived and worked in Phoenix, Arizona from 1981-1989 at an Area Agency on Aging nutrition site before taking over as the owner-operator of a residential home cleaning service. She returned to St. Petersburg in 1989, and was employed in social services for the next 10 years with the state Department of Children and Families Protective Services and Developmental Services as a med-waiver support coordinator.
While in St. Petersburg, Helen became involved with the St. Petersburg Audubon Society, and found a connection with the "conservation conversation" in Florida. In 2002, Helen moved back to Gainesville, and started a career in real estate with Trend Realty, where she has worked for the last 12 years. While in Gainesville, Helen has remained active with our local Audubon chapter, Alachua Audubon Society, and has volunteered with many civic and advocacy groups.
